The Dutch painter Han Snel (1925-1998) lived for half a century on the Indonesian island of Bali. The author who has been living in Bali since 1983 was a friend of the artist. There was no biography of Han Snel yet. This book fills this gap. The author outlines Han Snel’s life that begins with his youth in Scheveningen, his experiences during World War II and his forced departure to Indonesia as a conscripted soldier. The reader also gets a glimpse of the often turbulent years of the young Indonesian Republic and how Han survived it all and became a respected and famous artist. The author has conducted extensive interviews with Han Snel. A second source of information is Siti Snel, his widow, who is still living in Bali.
